Last week Nguyen took down the $300 No-Limit Hold’em event for $65,700 and then two days later added another first place finish in $500 Omaha Hi/Lo for $20,000. The No-Limit event drew 253 players while Nguyen had to get through 112 in Omaha Hi/Lo.

Nguyen is well know for his success playing poker in the City of Angels and If you look up his tournament results in L.A. you will see pages of final tables and over 39 first place finishes.

FTOPS IX weekend recap

Full Tilt pros Ram Vaswani, Thomas Wahlroos and Stefan Rapp all did exceptionally well, each making the final table in various events, while James “POKERPRO” Campbell took down a very impressive $157,500 for coming in second in Event 10 and Ben “bmf823″ Fineman won $300,000 for winning Event 12.

Ryan seemed like the best name to have, with the similarly named ryanghall and ryanbluf taking down huge events for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Hollywood flocks to Summer Nights Poker tournament

Over 150 players will take part in the tournament, which takes place at Ritual on Cahuenga Blvd., with the eventual winner receiving a seat into the Aug. 22 Aces Full three-table invitational satellite. That event features over $15,000 in cash and prizes, including a seat into the 2009 WPT Legends of Poker Main Event.

Among the celebrities expected to attend are Tia Carrere, Kelly Hu, Daisy Fuentes, Melinda Clark, Jamie Gold, Kristie Swanson, Roger Cross, Justin Hartley and many more.

Picking on the little guy

A recent high-stakes PLO session, a six-handed $200/$400 game on Full Tilt Poker, saw the usual suspects wade into the fray.

SteveSung, Gus Hansen and Ziigmund were at battle among two short-stack players taking a shot at the big game and one relatively unknown legit online player.

buck99, known to his mother as Shawn Buchanan, though not a regular at the Big Game, is no stranger to high-stakes poker. He bought a seat in the $25,000 Full Tilt Heads-Up Championship, sits periodically at the nosebleed stakes and has done incredibly well in some major live tournaments, including winning a WPT Mandalay Bay Championship, and most recently finishing fourth in a WSOP No-Limit Hold’em event.

Torch lit for RedKings Olympic promotion

The aptly named “Poker Games” start on Aug. 7 and will feature a total of 50 tournaments over three weeks running at all times of the day so players from around the world can get in on the action. There will be over $20,000 in guaranteed cash and prizes up for grabs over the span of the event.

There will be two opening ceremony freerolls on same day for $1,000 and $500 but that’s just preview of what’s to come over the next three weeks.

Republicans seek UIGEA clarification

The latest development has four Republican representatives, who are all pro-UIGEA, sending a letter to the Federal Reserve and Treasury Department seeking more clarification regarding the law.

The letter, which was signed by Jim Gerlach (R-Penn.), Christopher Shays (R-Conn.), Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Judy Biggert (R-Ill.), specifically asks what constitutes “online gambling.”

Advocates of legalizing online poker were particularly intrigued by the following sentence which refers to skill games:

Gold, Hellmuth among pros set to stump for charity

The One Step Closer Foundation (OSCF), a charity dedicated to easing the lives of those who suffer from cerebral palsy, is getting into the act for the first time next week with its first annual Celebrity Charity Poker Tournament.

Scheduled for noon on Sunday, Aug. 3 at Hollywood Park Casino in Los Angeles, Calif., the tournament has a $500 entry fee with unlimited $100 rebuys for the first 90 minutes. The starting stack is $2,500 in chips, while each rebuy is good for another $1,000 in chips.

Study suggests legalizing online poker

Cotte worked with colleague Kathryn Latour of the University of Nevada and over the course of their research they interviewed 20 regular casino gamblers and 10 regular online gamblers.

Cotte was surprised to learn that online poker is already bringing in $12 to $15 billion a year despite the fact U.S. players have to risk playing in an unregulated online market.

“The horse is out of the barn,” she said in the Times article. “There are a huge amount of people doing this already.”

Casino Arizona to host State Poker Championship

The tournament is scheduled for Aug. 16-18, with play beginning at 9 a.m. on the first two days as competitors play down to a final table. Then the final-table players will return on Aug. 18 to finish out the event.

The Arizona State Poker Championship is considered to be the most popular poker tournament in the state. This year it is expected to bring 600 players from all skill levels to Casino Arizona.

An even bigger draw for the players this year is an increase in the prize pool, from $500,000 to $650,000. The prize pool amount is based on the full 600 players registering for the event.

“Real Deal!” offers audience shot at pros

Well, not quite, but if the Venetian has anything to say about it, these poker stars and a few others might just be part of the next big thing in the Las Vegas show scene.

“The Real Deal!” is the first-ever interactive poker-themed stage show to appear in Vegas. Organizers are calling the show, which is set to debut this fall, a “new paradigm in entertainment.”

Whatever that means, it sounds like the show should be pretty cool.
